Consider this staggering statistic: one in three people over 65 will die with dementia. So what can a lifelong battle with proper sleep do to you in your golden years? Will a seemingly “harmless” struggle to get a good night’s sleep in your prime, position your body for ill health later on?
Unfortunately, studies increasingly are pointing to YES. Sleep matters. Today. Tomorrow. And long into our futures.
The single most important thing you can do today to safeguard your health tomorrow might not be just what you eat and how you move. It must also include how well you sleep.
Don’t ignore snoring as just an irritant. It is very often associated with sleep apnea and a multitude of health risks. Visit our Phoenix Center for Sleep Dentistry and have yourself tested. We are saving and improving longevity and quality of life daily with Oral appliance therapy for our Glendale and Peoria patients.

Dr. Donald Wilcox, Phoenix sleep apnea dentist, has personally experienced the results from a study published in Sleep Magazine. In this study from Australia, oral appliances, like those we construct at our Glendale Center for Sleep Dentistry, resulted in reduction in blood pressure, similar to that reported with CPAP. A recent study released from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows obesity levels continue to climb in the United States. In 2009, no state met the obesity target of 15%, and the overall prevalence of obesity among adults had increased 1.1 percentage points from 2007. Overall obesity prevalence in the US was an alarming 26.7%. Arizona came in between 25-29%.
Obese adults are at increased risk for many serious health conditions, including coronary hear disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, and premature death. One critical health factor that tends to increase with weight gain is snoring and sleep apnea. The relationship between these diseases and sleep apnea grows monthly in medical research.
At our Glendale sleep dentistry center, we help many patients improve the quality and longevity of their lives with oral appliance therapy to reduce significantly the impact of sleep apnea. If you suffer from untreated snoring and sleep apnea, do not ignore this threat to your health. Visit sleep apnea dentist Dr. Donald Wilcox who has helped many Phoenix and Glendale sleep apnea patients improve their quality of life. Last year, a study in an issue of SLEEP showed a clear association between averaging five hours or less of sleep each night and weight gain. Now in SLEEP May 2010 a Japanese study suggests eating habits are only part of the reason short sleep duration is interconnected with obesity.
People categorized as short sleepers tended to weigh more and exercise less.
They also preferred fatty food, snacked more frequently and ate out more often.
Those dietary habits were also associated with a high BMI, a characteristic of obesity.
Snoring and sleep apnea can be factors in having enough quality sleep to keep your metabolism in balance through a variety of biological pathways that can run amok when you do not get enough quality of sleep. If you are having trouble with weight gain or feeling rested, have yourself tested. Airway obstructions can prevent profound and much needed deep sleep.
