A recent study shows that smoking causes the body to turn against its own helpful bacteria, leaving smokers more vulnerable to gum disease. The healthy mouth contains a stable ecosytem of healthy bacteria. New research shows that the mouth of a smoker is a much more chaotic ecosystem. It is much more susceptible to invasion by harmful bacteria making smokers much more likely to suffer gum inflammation and bone loss around natural teeth or dental implants.
Assistant professor of periodontology at Ohio State University, Purnima Kumar states “The smoker’s mouth kicks out the good bacteria, and the pathogens are called in. So they are allowed to proliferate much more quickly than they would in a non-smoking environment.”
The results suggest that dentists should offer more agressive treatment options for smokers and have good reason to suggest quitting smoking. For more information visit www.DesertSmiles.com.

This great guy had worn his teeth severly over the years to where the lower front teeth were down to the gum line. A neuromuscular orthotic was used to reestablish the proper height for his teeth and face and to insure long term muscular comfort following reconstruction. Once established all remaining teeth were restored with porcelain crowns, bridges and veneers to create a terrific, younger looking smile and face due to proper support. Visit the gallery at www.DesertSmiles.com for more examples of smiles and faces of Phoenix and Glendale patients who’s bites have been restored by Phoenix dentist Dr. Don Wilcox. Our partner in guided implant design, Implant Solutions, will soon be releasing a technique that will allow us to fit the initial scanning appliance for 3D cone beam images in the mouth. This will save one entire visit and step in the implant design process for Phoenix implant patients. No longer will an impression be needed for a scanning appliance and waiting a week to receive the appliance back from the lab prior to the 3D image being taken.
For our Glendale dental implant office this will streamline the implant design phase without decreasing the enhanced quality provided by guided surgery for implant placement. Patients who are apprehensive and require sleep dentistry in Phoenix will welcome less visits to the office prior to surgery, as well as most of our patients with tight work schedules.

At our Phoenix cosmetic dental office, each patient who has a hygiene visit receives an oral cancer screening. Why? Consider these facts;
1. One person dies every hour from oral cancer in America.
2. The survival rate is approximately 52% after 5 years.
3. With early detection, survival rates improve to 80%+.
4. Only 25% of oral cancer is detected early.
5. Those who survive late diagnosis are often grossly disfigured from the aggressive surgery required to remove the cancer.
6. Oral cancer has increased 11% since 2007.
7. Oral cancer is the 6th most common cancer in the US and is more prevalent than skin cancer (malignant melanoma) and 3 time more prevalent than cervical cancer.

At our Phoenix implant dental office, we provide the latest in implant placement technology. Guided surgery using the three-dimensional capabilities of a CT scan coupled with software to plan the placement of the implant and attached crown or prosthesis produces unparalleled precision.
This allows exact three-dimensional planning of dental implants and the restorations attached to them. Based on the measurements and software planning, the implantation becomes safer, quicker and more relaxed for both patient and Dr. Wilcox. With the placement preplanned, we are able to provide a much better cosmetic result for the final restoration. Greater success and safety are provided by the three dimensional display of critical structures such as nerves and adjacent teeth.

Dental implants are a great dental innovation that replaces the old options of Dentures or Dental Bridges. Dental bridges are attached to the jawbone by a process called “osseointegration. Once attached to the jawbone the implants are just as strong, if not stronger, than your original teeth. This allows patients to enjoy confidence in the fact that their teeth will remain in place while talking, eating, and enjoying life…unlike its older counterparts.
Dental implants also never decay and they eventually fuse with the jawbone so bone loss is not a problem in general. When cared for correctly dental implants can last indefinitely.
