Poor Sleep Linked to Dimentia, Heart Disease, Diabetes, and Obesity

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

Consider this staggering statistic: one in three people over 65 will die with dementia.  So what can a lifelong battle with proper sleep do to you in your golden years?  Will a seemingly “harmless” struggle to get a good night’s sleep in your prime,  position your body for ill health later on?

Unfortunately, studies increasingly are pointing to YES.  Sleep matters.  Today. Tomorrow. And long into our futures.

The single most important thing you can do today to safeguard your health tomorrow might not be just what you eat and how you move.  It must also include how well you sleep.

Don’t ignore snoring as just an irritant.  It is very often associated with sleep apnea and  a multitude of health risks.  Visit our Phoenix Center for Sleep Dentistry and have yourself tested.  We are saving and improving longevity and quality of life daily with Oral appliance therapy for our Glendale and Peoria patients.

Obesity Continues to Rise in the United States

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

A recent study released from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows obesity levels continue to climb in the United States.  In 2009, no state met the obesity target of 15%,  and the overall prevalence of obesity among adults had increased 1.1 percentage points from 2007.  Overall obesity prevalence in the US was an alarming 26.7%.  Arizona came in  between 25-29%.

Obese adults are at increased risk for many serious health conditions, including coronary hear disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, and premature death.  One critical health factor that tends to increase with weight gain is snoring and sleep apnea.  The relationship between these diseases and sleep apnea grows monthly in medical research.

At our Glendale sleep dentistry center, we help many patients improve the quality and longevity of their lives with oral appliance therapy to reduce significantly the impact of sleep apnea.  If you suffer from untreated snoring and sleep apnea, do not ignore this threat to your health.  Visit sleep apnea dentist Dr. Donald Wilcox who has helped many Phoenix and Glendale sleep apnea patients improve their quality of life.  For more information about cosmetic and sedation dentistry in Peoria and Scottsdale, AZ, visit www.DesertSmiles.com.

Sleep and Weight Gain; Phoenix Sleep Apnea Dentist Dr. Donald Wilcox

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Last year, a study in an issue of SLEEP showed a clear association between averaging five hours or less of sleep each night and weight gain. Now in SLEEP May 2010 a Japanese study suggests eating habits are only part of the reason short sleep duration is interconnected with obesity.

People categorized as short sleepers tended to weigh more and exercise less.

They also preferred fatty food, snacked more frequently and ate out more often.

Those dietary habits were also associated with a high BMI, a characteristic of obesity.

Snoring and sleep apnea can be factors in having enough quality sleep to keep your metabolism in balance through a variety of biological pathways that can run amok when you do not get enough quality of sleep. If you are having trouble with weight gain or feeling rested, have yourself tested. Airway obstructions can prevent profound and much needed deep sleep.

Lack of Sleep Can Trigger Migranes; Phoenix Sleep Apnea Dentist Dr Donald Wilcox

Monday, July 19th, 2010

In a recent posting on The Insomnia Blog by Michael J. Breus, PhD, (www.thesleepdoctor.com) research at Missouri State University shows links between sleep deprivation and migraines in rats.

About 12 percent of the population, or 36 million Americans, suffer from migraine headaches. Sleep disruption is one of the most important migraine triggers. Making sure you get enough quality sleep is important, but even more so it seems keeping the same sleep schedule can be a key to avoiding triggering migraines.

Sometimes a bad bite can also be a trigger for different types of headaches. It can cause excessive tension in the jaw muscles leading to referred pain in other areas of the head and severe headaches. Neuromuscular dentistry which evaluates the condition of the jaw muscles and determines the proper jaw position of jaw comfort can eliminate may headaches including some migraines.

New Research of Effect on Intimate and Sexual Relationships in Men with Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Monday, July 5th, 2010

In the June 15, 2010 issue of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine published by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, a new study reported a decrease in overall sexual satisfaction in men associated with OSA. OSA has been found associated with lower testosterone levels in men compared to controls, which may play a role in ED. One investigation found that severe OSA is a risk factor of ED. Moreover, ED associated with OSA may improve with CPAP or oral appliance therapy, or co-therapy especially for severe OSA.
